‘Horse Meet’

Given the recent news surrounding this horse meat kerfuffle I thought it best to check on my horses. Matt was already dropping his Westfield off at BTec racing for his carbs to be rebuilt and Stu was getting a go on the rollers to check his air fuel ratio – it only seemed natural to tag along. Since I’ve built it I’ve not been massively impressed with the speed of my Westfield.

After wrapping up like the Michelin man I met with the above Swindonites and we convoy’d off. It was a bit foggy made worse with it condensing on the windscreen. Curse my decision not to bother with the intermittent setting for the wipers! Still we arrived there safe and sound and Stu put his loud and proud VX effort on first. That’s a really impressive engine that just doesn’t stop making power.

And then it was time for my much more sedate version. Two runs were done, one with the AFR probe in and one without. Interestingly it made slightly more torque with the probe in but with figures that small and close I don’t think you could confidently say that my car runs better with an ever so slightly more restricted exhaust!

Power run

Standard MX5 power is 133, so only one of mine has become lasagne. That’s not bad, and a shame really. I was all set to replace the engine to save fixing the coolant leak but as it’s giving good power I don’t think I should write it off, even after 144,000 miles! So at some point, assuming I ever get around to it I’ve got to pull the engine and get the block skimmed. A Westfield manifold will make an appearance some time soon and I’m tempted to fit an induction kit to replace the standard air box. It’d be interesting to see what kind of difference that makes.

Later on, after studying the graph in more detail I came up with the following thoughts:

The scale of the graph amplifies the dips in torque a bit, but they’re still a touch longer than expected. For instance at the start of my dip around 3,450, torque doesn’t come back to the same level until 4,600. Where as a 1.6 graph posted on WSCC lasts for 600rpm or so.

Putting my head in the sand, I’d quite like to blame it all on the intake track that you get with fitting the standard airbox (complete with pattern filter). I designed pipework to have an induction kit sitting just behind one of the FW intakes, but it was coming in at over £200 so I dropped it from the build in the end.

It’d be nice to blame my dissatisfaction on performance on this flatspot. I generally start overtakes at 3.5k rpm and that’s what I’m most disappointed in. Torque only drops off a couple of lb/ft though and to be honest I can’t see the bum dyno picking that one up.

Hearing Stu’s VX on throttle bodies screaming at the rollers has certainly kept superchargers off the radar!

However, if you change the axis of the chart to start from 0 lb/ft it looks a lot better:

Torque

Maybe I’m just reading too much into the small fluctuations! The above is a pretty good torque curve to me.

Registration still continues

12th February 2013

At the end of January I had a problem in that I couldn’t tax the Westfield because the online system said it needed an MOT. I phoned the DVLA for assistance and they suggested that if I came down with the V5 I could tax my vehicle.

I should add that prior to this I sent a very detailed letter to the Bristol office explaining why I thought it was registered incorrectly, what steps were taken in building it and details of another Mazda SDV Westfield registered through that office correctly just 9 months earlier. I am yet to receive a response (1 month wait now).

So I got to the local office and end up in the following conversation:

DVLA: “It needs an MOT”
Me: “But it was only built last year and it got IVA’d in August”.
DVLA: “The V5 shows it was IVA’d but that’s not an MOT”
Me: “So how did it get taxed six months ago? Anyway, that’s the problem, it’s registered incorrectly.”
DVLA : “Then you’ll have to write in”
Me: “I did that in August, and then again in January when you failed to correct it”
DVLA: “I’ll go check”

Obviously at this point I’m getting my hopes up that the guy at the counter just needs to get an update for all this and I’ll be on my way.

DVLA: “It was registered under the points system.”
Me: “And that’s been done wrong.”
DVLA: “Send us a letter detailing what was done and we’ll have a look”
Me: “I’ve done that”
DVLA: “Ok you’ll need to send one including the V5”
Me: “Swansea told be specifically not to send in the V5”
DVLA: “We’ll need the V5”
Me: “Well it’s in your hand”
DVLA: “And we’ll need a letter saying what’s been done”
Me: “I’ve done that, sent it in last month”
DVLA: “We’ll need the V5 too”
Me: “But it’s in your hand right now?”
DVLA: “We’ll need a letter saying what’s been done”
Me: “You’ve got that too, I sent it in last month”
DVLA: “And we need the V5 too”
Me: “It’s in your hand, you’ve got it.”
DVLA: “I can’t sort it over the counter sir”
Me: “I’m sorry but I genuinely don’t understand, you’re asking me for stuff you’ve already got.”
DVLA: “We’ll need a letter and the V5”

By now, I’m absolutely confused. I decided to call it quits – these guys will be out of the job come the end of the year and I get the impression they genuinely couldn’t give a sh*t because of it. Kind of understating but massively frustrating. I’ll phone up Swansea later and see if I can’t get them to book me a meeting with the guy that does the registrations there. The start of todays conversation did say I take it up with Swansea as they do the registrations so I had to point out to him that Swansea told me to take it up with you because your office registered it and so only your office can fix it.

Registration continues

9th January 2013

Yes. It’s taking this long!

Just got a letter from the DVLA local office. I feel between Swansea and them they’ve got the idea that I’m trying to register it as a brand new vehicle. Well, they’re half right but I’m not after anything but an age related plate.
“As your vehicle was rebuilt using the majority of major components from the Mazda your vehicle was allocated the original registration back. When this happens all the original information (previous keepers, license history etc.) will stay the same only the make, model and body type if required will be amended to reflect the changes made.”

Of course, on the DVLA website it says:

You can apply to keep a rebuilt vehicle’s original registration number if you can prove you’ve used:

  • the original unmodified chassis or bodyshell (car or light van)
  • a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original (car or light van)
  • an unmodified frame, either original or new (motorbike)

Tax runs out at the end of this month, just put the reference number in and they’ve updated the make as “WESTFIELD SEIW”. Why would you do that? Who let the work experience kid register my car?

10th January 2013

Back on the phone to DVLA Swansea. It seems like the DVLA are under the impression that I’ve rebodied the MX5, despite the inspection and being told I had more than enough points. They initially said I had to write a letter into Swansea which I said is how I started this all off back in September. I’ve now got to write a letter into Bristol and persuade them that they’re wrong.

Problems and upgrades

1st September 2012

The engine is still leaking coolant. Well it’s leaking from the pipe at the bottom of the header tank so that might get replaced with silicone but it’s also leaking from above the oil pressure switch which suggests the block needs skimming. The head was skimmed on the rebuild so the block must not be quite flat.

So onto the first upgrade. After the driving on the Swindon meet and seeing other Westfields with them I opted for the perspex wind deflectors from Westfield. I knew you could get them on ebay, but I decided that with my 10% discount and still having to get the hinges from Westfield anyway I might as well get it all from one place. Ordered on Tuesday, arrived on Wednesday.

Perspex wind deflectors

So you get two pieces of bent perspex, some hinges, some nuts, washers and bolts. You also get two rubber pads that can be riveted on but I decided not to use these.

First up, remove the IVA covers and fit the hinges into hinges onto the windscreen pillars. The bottom ones were quite tight and required a little persuasion which they duly received.

Hinges test fitting

I held up the deflector to the hinges lining one of the folds up with the bottom of the scuttle. After marking the position of the brackets I could drill the holes et voila.

I like how they’re reasonably invisible from the frontal view

They also don’t distort the view of the mirror

Lastly, I put some spare IVA friendly trim on the bottom to stop them marking the bodywork if they moved or vibrated slightly

Deflectors rubber edging
They work surprisingly well. Harness slap is greatly reduced and breathing above 80mph is suddenly possible again. They don’t remove the wind altogether of course, the hair still gets dressed! I’d say it’s more like how the MX5 was with the roof down and windows down.

That will probably do for now. I’m starting to plan out any winter upgrades (keeping in mind the engine will be coming out). From driving the car I think I need more power – it doesn’t seem to accelerate quickly enough in 3rd gear.

Registration chase up

29th August 2012

Called the DVLA – they suspect that it’s because of the donor parts used. Which suggests they should re-read the build up form!

I’ve got to send the V5C back along with a covering letter.

It’s also showing as taxed until August 2013, when I only put 6 months on it. Not all bad then, shame the tax disc doesn’t match
