Swindon Meet

26th August 2013

Being reasonably good weather some of the local Swindonites on the WSCC forum organised a little meet up and drive out. We met up at a pub with a fair size car park and Stu still managed to mess up the parking:

There’s definitely a thriving Westfield scene in Swindon and hopefully next summer will see many more of these meets and runs out

Registration problems?

28th August 2013

I received the V5 today and it doesn’t quite seem right. It appears as though I’ve basically got the same V5 back, but with updated information. So, make/model, chassis number, engine number, colour etc is correct, but it’s got all the previous information on it. Things like previous owner, date I bought it etc.

A note has been added to do with something about SVA/IVA certificate and some emissions ratings but that’s it.

I was expecting a V5 with the date of first registration as this month, and some note saying it was built from old parts. It seems they’ve confused what I’ve done with a ‘rebody’ such as putting a Ferrari-like kit on an MR2.

I’ll phone up tomorrow and see what’s what. They did ask if the chassis was destroyed which made me think it was all ok. I thought they were just being efficient by scrapping the MX5 and reusing the plate at the same time.

DVLA Inspection Day

21 August 2013

A relatively simple process. I got the car transported to the DVLA office by a local recovery company and after a 10 minute inspection and a quick bit of paperwork I was given my tax disc and the car was road legal! Fortunately I was assigned the same registration number as the donor so when I got home I could quickly stick the plates on and go for a drive.

1 hour later I was home, car unloaded and plates affixed. I decided to surprise my son by picking him up from his holiday club in it. I think it made his day more than mine! Mother nature soon intervened and turned a nice sunny day into a torrential downpour and we both go drenched. There was so much water in the bootbox I think it would have happily given a goldfish a home. A comical first drive then but my enthusiasm wasn’t as dampened as I was.

After all that time, effort and money it was finally road legal. Job done.

Track day at Abingdon

17th August 2012

I woke up on time. I started loading the car onto the trailer. I spectacularly underestimated how long it would take me to load the car! I guesstimated 10 minutes which I could do now but it took me a lot longer.

I first had the trailer flat, put down the ramps and slowly made my way on. Then I grounded the chassis hoop whilst ‘breaking over’. Back off the trailer, raise the nose height and I was on. I levelled the trailer back off, stowed the ramps then got to work strapping it down. By this time I’d already told those I was supposed to be meeting to leave without me! I got there in the end though and the car was nice and secure the whole journey. I arrived just in time to catch the briefing but would have to sign on afterwards.

I signed on then jumped in another Westfield as passenger for the sighter lap. After this and with the first cars rolling out on track I unloaded the Westfield and got it noise tested. A mere 92db, such a civilised creation!

Eventually I went out for my first few laps and Matt jumped in as passenger. The first lap was sedate just looking out for the brake markers and turn in points and I upped the pace slightly for the second lap. And on the second corner of the second lap the back end let go and couldn’t be persuaded to step back in line! Fortunately it wasn’t busy and I was able to finish the lap and come and in consider what happened. I initially blamed a mid corner bump coupled with a lack of alignment on the wheels but in hindsight it’s more likely because I was still on the brakes when I turned in. The bump may well have been a factor but as I never spun again and hit that bump numerous times I think it was all kicked off by a moment of ineptitude!

I did a few more ‘sessions’ (it was open pit lane mind) getting better and better and I ended up keeping up with the MX5s. Which must have meant the money invested in this project effectively hid my fast driving deficiencies!

Unfortunately I had to cut the day short at 2:30pm so I could get home, unload the Westfield, drop the trailer off and go camping. Still, I definitely enjoyed it and hope for many more in 2013!

Inspection booked

11th August 2012

Got the DVLA Inspection booking through. 21st August rather than 14th originally given to me. That meant I definitely wouldn’t be driving the car to the Abingdon track day so I booked the hire of a trailer. Actually two trailers.

The Friday will be a busy day as I’m off camping that afternoon/evening. I decided to hire a camping trailer as well so that once I’d finished the track day I could drop off the car trailer, hitch up the camping trailer and just go thus maximising time at the track.
